Understanding jaw pain and TMJ treatment
Jaw pain, or “temporomandibular joint” (TMJ) syndrome, can be such a pain! It hurts to talk, it hurts to eat sometimes, or it hurts just to open your mouth. When the jaw pain is bad, in some cases it can even lead to headaches and tension around the neck.
Chiropractic treatment of the TMJ joint focuses on relieving tension in the muscles around the joints, using trigger point therapy to alleviate the jaw pain associated with TMJ. In some cases, misalignment of the jaw that results from bad posture or a pre-existing back problem can cause TMJ joint disorder.
Here at Adaptive Chiropractic in Melbourne, our approach to TMJ treatment caused by misalignment in your neck and upper back is to perform chiropractic adjustments on your spinal joints around these problematic areas. We also use cranial therapy to help alleviate tension in the skull to further improve painful TMJ associated symptoms.
Common causes of jaw pain
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is found on either side of your jaw, and connects your jawbone to your skull, acting like a sliding hinge. Jaw pain is caused when the TMJ is not working properly, resulting in pain in the jaw joint and also the muscles that control jaw movement.
The exact cause of a person’s jaw pain can be difficult to diagnose, as it is often due to a combination of factors. These include genetics, arthritis, jaw injury, or misalignment of the jaw. Some people who tend to clench or grind their teeth might experience some jaw pain as well, although many individuals do not.
Effective ongoing TMJ exercises
With our chiropractic TMJ treatments and exercises, motion of your TMJ joint can improve, and related symptoms such as ear pain, jaw locking, headaches, and neck pain can be reduced.
What to expect from your jaw pain treatment
Generally, your first jaw pain treatment will last up to 30 minutes and can be done straight after your examination. Most of our patients experience results from their very first treatment.
Here at Adaptive Chiropractic, our chiropractors’ gentle yet effective alignment techniques are gentle enough for children, and are able to restore function and movement for athletes and seniors alike.
